I love historical fiction, whether it be books or television or movies, and in particular, I’ve been taken with the setting for the Outlander tv series (based off the books by Diana Gabaldon) on STARZ, which is set in the highlands of Scotland in the 18th century, complete with castles, farm life, and positively gorgeous period costuming. In the hiatus between now and April, when the second half of the season picks up, I’m going to need to pass the time doing something because otherwise, I’m going to go crazy trying to be patient (it is THAT good)! So, why not spend it learning how to paint the types of landscapes that could belong in a good, historical adventure?
Pastel Landscape Painting Course, Part 1 and Part 2 with Scottish landscape artist Margaret Evans, are perfect for filling the void. In part 1, Margaret teaches the basics of pastel painting, starting with picking out your color palette and the types of strokes and work you can do with the medium. Then, follow along as she demonstrates two different landscape paintings, one of a castle set in the Scottish Highlands, and the other of a farmhouse structure surrounded by fields and trees.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be Scottish to be scenic, as we discover in Part 2, where the three art lessons take us to Italy to learn how to paint people into a Tuscan street scene, along with a Venetian waterscape, and distant mountains. You’ll learn how to make use of a good underpainting to create a strong foundation for your composition, simplify details, and more.
Of course, you don’t have to live or visit Scotland or Italy to get some gorgeous landscapes. With these art videos, you’ll get great instruction and a taste of adventure without having to leave your studio or home. So where do you want to paint?
